Caring for each and every family member

About Sornthai Eye Center

Sornthai Eye Center is a family practice with a specialized children’s eye center, built upon a decade of research and 3 generations of experience, setting a new standard of primary eye care in Bangkok. Our patient care is guided by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Consult an eye specialist in Bangkok.

More than just “windows to the soul”, your eyes offer doctors a uniquely clear view of nerves and blood vessels which can reveal a lot about your overall health. This is why comprehensive eye exams often show the first signs of serious conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and (of course) eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration. Regular eye exams at Sornthai Eye Center can help spot more than 30 conditions earlier to help you and your loved ones avoid serious health complications.

For school-aged children, yearly comprehensive eye exams are necessary to detect eye diseases and vision problems, and maintain long-term healthy vision. Between ages 6 to 18, a child’s vision can change frequently and sometimes unexpectedly. Many kids with 20/20 vision have trouble reading due to (hidden) binocular vision dysfunction. Whatever the cause, poor vision left uncorrected impairs child development and hinders your child’s ability to learn, play, and grow in an educational setting.

The goal of most eye doctors is to correct your vision to 20/20 or to help you see clearly at 20 feet. That’s why we see a lot of patients come in with symptoms like headaches, dizziness, eyestrain or difficulty concentrating—while believing there’s nothing wrong with their eyes.

At Sornthai, we provide to families the same level of eye care you would get in Australia (global 1st in healthcare outcomes), which includes holistic-comprehensive eye exam with binocular vision assessment, treatments for eye conditions, extensive behavioral eye exam, vision therapy, contact lens fitting, and contact lens aftercare.

Dr. Nataporn Chaiprukmalakan (Nat), BOptom

As the eldest child of a family that's been making spectacles for generations, Nat went on to study optometry in Australia with great enthusiasm. Her interest in neuroscience and love for children, led her to develop a passion for behavioral optometry or pediatric optometry, and she worked hard to cultivate a deeper understanding of it. One summer, she conducted a behavioral eye exam on her mother and discovered that mom has been living with undiagnosed binocular vision dysfunction (BVD) for over 50 years. Surrounded by optometrists and opticians, Nat's mother never knew that BVD was the cause of her eyes skipping lines while reading and difficulty catching or throwing balls. Nobody knew of the condition, or that it can actually be treated. It was then that Nat decided to return home. After 2 years of working with children in Australia, including those with BVD, it became clear to her that Thai children with BVD can lead happier lives free of constant, daily struggles. Living with BVD should be a thing of the past, ending in our parents' generation.

OutstandingPrimary Eye Care

Sornthai proudly provides essential primary eye care to children and adults. Our comprehensive eye examinations go beyond the norm of just measuring visual acuity or clarity of vision. Let’s take a look at the different tests we run for our patients.

Vision Acuity Test

We determine the correct lens prescription for your eyes using a computer-controlled auto refractor for objective refraction, followed by a subjective refraction exam for accuracy.

Non-Invasive Tonometry

Our non-contact tonomete measures the fluid pressure inside your eyes without the need for numbing eyedrops. This procedure detects risk for glaucoma and intraocular infections.

Contact Lens Fitting

Choosing contacts that perfectly fit the curve of your eyes lessens symptoms of eye discomfort, eye strain, and dry eyes. This keeps your eyes healthy even with regular contact lens wear.

Binocular Vision Assessment

Diagnose amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (turned eye), as well as phoria (eyes misaligned when fusion is broken)—one of the most common causes of eye discomfort that fly by undetected. Phoria hinders development and the ability to read and learn, making this exam crucial for every child under 12 and those with learning difficulties.

Corneal Topography

Our Center offers 360-degree corneal mapping for keratoconus screening, contact lens fitting, and post-operative care after LASIK, pterygium surgery, corneal transplant, and other eye surgeries.

Colorblindness Test & Analysis

For high accuracy colorblindness testing, we use the Ishihara Test to detect the condition and the Farnsworth D-15 to diagnose the type and quantity (severity) of the deficiency.

Extensive Behavioral Eye Exam

Assess the level of visual perception, visual analysis, the eyes’ ability to quickly and accurately shift attention from one object to another, the understanding of laterality (right-left), body awareness, spatial awareness, and peripheral awareness, to enhance skills required in reading, learning, sports and playing musical instruments.

Biomicroscopy

A detailed assessment of the anterior (frontal) eye. During your biomicroscopy, we examine your eyelids, eyelashes, ocular mucous membrane, corneal, iris, and crystalline lenses to find conditions like cataracts, dry eyes, eyelid bumps, corneal swelling, and eye infections.

Ophthalmoscopy

Using a Fundus Camera, we photograph the back of your eyes for a posterior eye assessment. We examine your retina, optic disc, and blood vessels to detect conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, embolisms, and diabetic retinopathy.

Low Vision Exam & Analysis

Some vision problems unfortunately can’t be corrected, nor treated. When glasses, contact lenses, medicine, and surgery don’t work, Sornthai’s compassionate and practical approach tailored to the individual ensures an improved quality of life.

Boost learning skills with vision therapy (ACBO Australia)

25% of all children have binocular vision problems, where their eyes struggle to work together as a team. This causes eyestrain, double vision, nausea, and headaches, and is often mistaken for clumsiness, laziness, learning disorders or ADD/ADHD. ACBO Australia’s vision therapy programs at Sornthai help children see comfortably and efficiently, for enhanced memory, reading comprehension, confidence, and overall learning experience.
