Our Family and Yours:
65 Years of Sornthai
From the house of Sornthaiteva (Est. 1956 in Nakhonsawan), to the bustling streets across Bangkok’s World Trade Center (CentralWorld), our family business grew with the steadfast belief that outstanding eye care is key to a rich and healthy life.
"Primary eye care must become a frontline activity, providing eye care and identifying disease before it becomes a serious medical issue.”
When Songsak Sornthaiteva first opened his wholesale and retail store in Bangkok, eyewear stores were run by opticians who passed down the art of refraction and dispensing from generation to generation. His daughter, Benjapa Sornthaiteva, deeply immersed herself in the retail side of the business. She was adamant that all Sornthai customers receive the best, most comfortable vision, and continuously searched for the latest eyewear technology.
In the 1990s, Benjapa’s future-forward thinking got her enrolled in Thailand’s first optometry program where professors from around the world joined hands to educate Thai opticians on the healthcare aspect of the industry. The program inspired her to study abroad and become an optometrist in order to provide “complete” care, but Sornthai’s expansion held her back. Regardless, Benjapa’s belief in comprehensive eye care for the betterment of the people remained.
With the same belief in mind, Benjapa’s daughter, Nataporn Chaiprukmalakan, got her optometry degree at the University of Melbourne. She was fascinated by how much impact a great optometrist can have on a child, and completed a Vision Therapy course at the Australasian College of Behavioral Optometry (ACBO), after which she worked at independent practice in Northern Queensland, Australia where she conducted school vision screenings and vision therapy for school-aged children. She works part-time as a clinical instructor at Rangsit University and lecturer at the Thai Optometric School.
Through Sornthai, Nataporn and her two siblings work together to fulfill the family’s vision of raising the standard of primary eye care in Thailand, for the well-being of all Thai people including generations to come.

Family Eye Doctors Led By Behavioral (Pediatric) Optometrist

Dr. Nataporn Chaiprukmalakan (Nat), BOptom
As the eldest child of a family that's been making spectacles for generations, Nat went on to study optometry in Australia with great enthusiasm. Her interest in neuroscience and love for children, led her to develop a passion for behavioral optometry or pediatric optometry, and she worked hard to cultivate a deeper understanding of it. One summer, she conducted a behavioral eye exam on her mother and discovered that mom has been living with undiagnosed binocular vision dysfunction (BVD) for over 50 years. Surrounded by optometrists and opticians, Nat's mother never knew that BVD was the cause of her eyes skipping lines while reading and difficulty catching or throwing balls. Nobody knew of the condition, or that it can actually be treated. It was then that Nat decided to return home. After 2 years of working with children in Australia, including those with BVD, it became clear to her that Thai children with BVD can lead happier lives free of constant, daily struggles. Living with BVD should be a thing of the past, ending in our parents' generation.

Dr. Paphawee Vanichgoon (Jan), O.D.
Talking to patients shed light on the improvements optometrists can make to Thailand's very own public healthcare system. Throughout the years, Jan has met several individuals living with undiagnosed chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, and overworked adults, who have high risk for early macular degeneration. She has also met several young children who struggle with reading comprehension for seemingly no reason. Her experience showed her the importance of eye health and vision screenings for all. And knowing that all of us at Sornthai contribute to the prevention of long-term illnesses, improving Thai people's health and quality of life--Jan finds that incredibly inspiring.
